As we are past Thanksgiving and well into December, I’ve been getting questions and comments from friends and family about how to decorate for the holidays. Many of the comments had some common themes. Either we don’t have enough time or money to invest in decorating or we don’t know where to start. Before I continue, one thing you should keep in mind in all of this is…fun! Yes, fun! It shouldn’t be work or stressful…it should be fun! Decorating your home is a way of expressing yourself and making it feel like your home. Especially around the holidays, gathering with friends and family is always better in the comforts of a nice home.
So in order to address some of these issues, I’ve gathered a little list of five easy ways to decorate for the holidays.
1. Add a Wreath
This is probably the easiest way to show some Christmas spirit. Go out to Target or HomeGoods, find a nice wreath you like and throw that thing up somewhere. It doesn’t have to be on your front door. It can be on your inside door, above a fireplace or mantel, on a wall or use a smaller one to decorate around a candle. If you’re interested in doing a little DIY, you can also make your own wreath. Check out my tutorial showing how I made my fall wreath earlier this year.
2. Dress Up with Garland
Garland is probably my favorite thing to decorate with. You can decorate just about anything with some garland – above the cabinets, fireplace or mantel, book shelves or entertainment center. It can also be wrapped around a stair railing or even a curtain rod.
3. Replace the Ordinary
Think of something you have around your house in your everyday décor that could be replaced with something festive. It could be replacing a picture on a wall with a holiday themed frame. It could be swapping out the centerpiece on your dining room table. Keep an eye out for a nice holiday rug you could change out for one in front of the kitchen sink or front porch.
4. Throw In Some Ornaments
Do you have any empty bowls, glasses or maybe lanterns around your home? Fill those things with some ornaments and BAM…you’re ready for the holidays! To step up your game, pair your ornaments with a fun or unique holiday piece, like this fun, red truck I picked up at Target.
5. Deck the Halls with Dishes
You don’t have to keep that nice set of holiday mugs hiding behind the cabinet. These are perfect for decorating around the house to create a nice festive vibe. You could also invest in some nice holiday placemats or chargers to dress up your dining room table. You don’t set your table? Well, neither did I! But this Christmas, I did and it really makes the difference.
Now get out there and have some fun! And be sure to share some pictures of what you come up with!! 🙂
