It’s been a busy week but I’m proud to say I finally finished my closet! Some of you are probably thinking, “Finished your closet? It’s a closet…what’s to finish?” When we first moved in, our front coat closet had nothing to it other than an ugly wire rack.
After buzzing around Pinterest (I know weird right?!), I came up with a general idea of what I wanted to do with the closet to make it more functional and “pretty” looking.
I started with painting the inside a nice neutral gray to give it some color and a couple shelves for shoes. I made one a normal width for adult shoes and a shorter one on top for my daughter’s shoes since hers are a little bit smaller than mine and my husband’s.
Then I nailed some bead board to the inside and trimmed that out to give it some depth. There were a few gaps here and there so to give it a nice clean look I filled in those gaps with wood filler and painted the trim, bead board and the shelves white.
Once the paint was dry, it was time to add my coat rack and a top shelf. The coat rack was just a stained 1×4 anchored to the wall with a couple hooks added to it.
Then of course, it was time for a trip to Target. I grabbed a couple baskets for the top shelf to store gloves, hats and mittens and a rug to catch the dirt from shoes. I also had a couple larger baskets that I got from Ikea a couple years ago, which I added to the bottom to hold any other shoes that didn’t fit on the shelves.
Now you’re are probably saying, “That seems like a lot of work for a closet that nobody is going to see!” and you’re right. But the closet isn’t for everyone else to see. I have to see the closet everyday and it is makes me feel good having nice, organized spaces for our things. So with that being said, closets need love too, right!? 😉
